Alex Steed has been producing independent zines since he clandestinely put out No Magazine on his school's photocopier when he was 15. For a "non-creator" as he calls himself, he is extremely connected and interested in the Portland art and music communities, and he is responsible for soliciting and collecting most of the works presented here. He also cooks a mean breakfast.

Arielle Walrath is a graphic designer with an interest in propaganda and poster design and a hearty collection of out-of-date reference books, used tickets, forms, tags and other old, discarded things. She designed this website; more of her work is at www.ariellewalrath.com

Brendan Evans is the owner of Strange Maine, a tiny store located at 578 Congress Street in Portland, Maine featuring an eclectic set of new and used goods and ephemera from the worlds of the odd, occult, sci-fi, and horrific.

The Damsels in Burlesque are Kit Chaos, Victoria Venom, Scarlet, Taloola Legs, Simone West, Ginger Magnolia, Crazy janitor Chantel Kill 'n' Sell, comedian "dirty" Dustin, and dj Graymatter.

Webster's dictionary describes burlesque as: “Any broadly comic or satirical imitation, as of a writing, play, etc; derisive caricature; parody. A sort of vaudeville characterized by low comedy, striptease acts, ect. Derisively or comically imitating.”

Last summer, a group of girls who loved to dance took this definition along with random bits of film and history on the subject, and banded together as The Damsels in Burlesque! With some daydreaming and lots of hard work the Damsels created a variety show of dancing, striptease, both silly and sexy, comedy routines and live local music. Check out the Damsels at www.myspace.com/damselsinburlesque for more info.

David Kish, a prolific and brilliantly funny cartoonist, is responsible for Hoopleville Comics. You can find his comics in the Phoenix papers. This photograph is of another David Kish which magically appeared when searching for images of our own Kish. While the Kish here displayed is not as handsome as our own, we like it quite a bit anyway.

Hannah Kreiswirth is a filmmaker from Canada who also designs jewelry and clothes and who is many places via her work. More about her at www.myspace.com/asymmetricdesign

Katie Diamond is a queer radical feminist cartoonist who strongly believes it's the responsibility of the artist to comment upon society and therefore change the world. She also loves Sesame Street and chocolate chip cookies.

Kurt Graser has worked as a producer/editor for ESPN, NBCSports.com, American View Productions, and independently with is own production company, Nuttmeg Productions.

Lorenzo Raffa is a rock star at Portland community radio station WMPG and he has a podcast site at thelorenzocommentaries.libsyn.com.

Megan Carrie is a girl who likes to make art. More about Meg at www.myspace.com/justthegirlnextdoorphoto

Michelle Souliere is the editor of the Strange Maine blog at strangemaine.blogspot.com, the Strange Maine Gazette, as well as Poetry Comix and Bad Cakes zines.

Patrick O'Rorke is a recent graduate of Portland’s Maine College of Art and a serious artist. His current exhibition is at Whitney Art Works (45 York Street in Portland, Maine) until February 10th. Entitled "It's not yours, you stole it", it uses pattern, color and text to convey ideas on music and contemporary culture, language, abstraction and appropriation.

Tim Cole is a creative genius. Straight up.
